Internet ID and Password

What Is My Internet ID?
Your Internet ID (“X500”) is a unique identifier created by the University from letters in your last name and, most often, several digits. You will receive your X500 as soon as you have been entered by CCAPS payroll staff into the University data system. You will use the X500 along with your password to log in to the many University services available to you via the Internet. You can look up an Internet ID and other public information by using the OneStop People Search functionality.

Setting and Changing Your Password
To activate your password for your Internet ID, call the University Twin Cities Technology Helpline (612-301-4357, or 1-HELP from a campus phone). Select the password option. Identify yourself as uAPS faculty. If you forget your password, call this same number. The Helpline cannot retrieve it, but a staff member will assist you in going through the process of setting a new one. If you know your password and want to change it, you can do so online. Go to MyU and then My Info and click Internet Account Options.  This will open your account self-service tab.  Click Password Management in the left menu bar, and then Reset Your UMN Password.

Password Security
Your password is known only to you, so be sure you record it securely. Also be aware that no official tech/OIT staff will ever ask for your password, and you should never give it to anyone. Phishing emails (ones asking you to reply back with your password and other personal information) have been coming more and more frequently to University e-mail addresses.  See Recognize and Report Email Scams for further information.

University E-mail Account

All uAPS faculty, students, and staff have basic University of Minnesota Google e-mail accounts, "[email protected]." Your e-mail can be used as soon as you activate your Internet ID password.  Initially, all e-mail accounts are basic client/server accounts. Additional services are also available for managing e-mail. Some of these are provided by default; others require the user to opt in. Central e-mail services include mail routing, spam blocking, virus filtering, and the UMN Mail client. In addition to Gmail, the University partnership with Google has given the University community access to Google Apps, a suite of state-of-the-art communication and collaboration tools.

Check University E-mail on the Web
You can access your University e-mail remotely via any Internet browser at any location using the webmail client UMN Mail. Go to www.mail.umn.edu, and log in with your Internet ID. You can also send e-mail via this Web site. Another option for e-mail web access is myu.umn.edu.

Why Use University E-mail?
uAPS faculty should always use their University e-mail for University-related correspondence. This address identifies you as a University employee. News and updates from the University are sent only to @umn.edu addresses. Your @umn.edu address is posted on One Stop as your contact e-mail address for students and others. uAPS will send all communications to you through your University e-mail unless you request otherwise.  If you prefer to read your Gmail in your personal account, you can have it redirected (see below).

Redirecting Your E-mail
If you choose to do this, go to your Gmail page and click on the Settings gear icon in the upper right corner.  Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.  You will see there a setup option to forward your Gmail to your preferred e-mail address.

Desktop Client/Mobile Device
Once you have your account, you don't need to do anything special to access your e-mail through a Web browser.  However, if you choose to use a desktop client or are using UMN Mail on a mobile device, go here for setup instructions.

Students Must Use University E-mail
Your students are required by University policy to use their University e-mail accounts. All correspondence should be sent to the student's University e-mail. Student E-mail Policy: “A University-assigned student e-mail account shall be the University's official means of communication with all students.”

Updating Your Personal Information

Go to www.myu.umn.edu. Log in with your Internet ID and click on the My Info tab. Here you can view and change a variety of personal information. You can also suppress information you do not want displayed in One Stop search results.
