Class Information
The University of Minnesota uses PeopleSoft software for human resources purposes but also for instructional administration, including class rosters and registration. Faculty members typically do not have direct access to PeopleSoft, but the system generates output reports, available on MyU, that give them real-time access to essential information.
Schedule, Location, and Enrollment
Your class list is available in MyU (via the Teaching tab and also via the Key Links tab after clicking on Faculty Center). The enrollment information includes student data and pictures as well as real-time data on enrolled students, withdrawals, and wait list via a drop-down. You can download the list as an Excel spreadsheet.
Be sure to check your class listing in MyU prior to the start of the semester. Click on the name of your class for the Class Detail pop-up. It will indicate the following information:
- Term start and end date: Generally, 3- and 4-credit uAPS classes span the entire semester. Most 7-week classes occur in either the first or last half of the semester.
- Class capacity and current enrollment.
- Campus location and room: Class locations appear following the term dates.
- Your name as instructor on the lecture section (and any related lab or recitation section, if applicable).
- Prerequisites and course description.
- Class Notes: uAPS staff use this field to post any special information or notices about a particular class.
Here are some additional information links:
- Course Catalog: information about your course, as maintained by uAPS in collaboration with UMN systems..
- University Bookstore: for online ordering of the class textbook(s)

Registration
Students who have registered during the previous term may register online using the Academics tab in MyU during their designated registration time. A student may register for a class that has seats available, unless they lack those prerequisites that are enforced by the system. (Some prerequisites are only recommended and do not restrict registration.) Summer semester registrations begin the preceding March, fall registrations the preceding April, and spring registrations the preceding November. Regular registration continues through the end of the first week of the semester. Registrations in the week after that require a permission number. After the second week of class, permission numbers do not work; such late registrations require the filing of an Academic Policy Petition through the student's college. View registration information for non-admitted/non-degree students.
Permission ("Magic") Numbers
Often students are not allowed by the registration system to enroll for a particular class because they do not have the enforced prerequisites or are not a member of the requisite group. The student may, however, have a special, extenuating need to take the class. If you are the instructor, the student may contact you to request the permission number. After evaluating the student's background, you may or may not approve their registration. If you believe they are qualified to take the class, you may e-mail your approval to Lynn Cross at [email protected]. She will then issue a permission number if space is available.
Instructors are usually not involved in giving out magic numbers. Giving a permission number to a particular student will preempt any waitlist in place for your class. Permission numbers can also override the enrollment limit and so must be carefully monitored, as there is a potential for classes to become too large. This is why it is best to let the uAPS administration take care of this process. Occasionally Lynn will designate to you a short list of numbers for your own use, if this is appropriate for your situation and discussed in advance.
A special note for INET classes: As of Fall 2025, we have updated registration prerequisites for many of the INET classes. Students who are prevented from registering due to these prerequisites should be referred to ITI academic advisor Ashley Cruz, [email protected], for a determination on whether they should receive a permission number.
Wait List
When a uAPS class reaches the enrollment cap, a wait list notification will appear in the online registration system, if a wait list has been set up for your class. Interested students can add their names to the wait list by going through the registration process and choosing the wait list option. When space becomes available, the system will auto-enroll students into the class according to their wait list position. If a wait-listed student has an overriding need to get into the class, such as graduating senior status, uAPS staff can adjust their wait list position. Wait lists are automatically closed and cleared at 11:59 p.m. the day before the first day of classes. Refer wait list questions to Lynn Cross, [email protected].
Registration and Withdrawal Deadlines
Late Registrations
For any initial registration during the first two weeks of any session (regular, first, or second session) students incur a late registration fee of $50. For any initial registration beginning the third week or later of any session (regular, first, or second session) students incur a late registration fee of $100. *Fall and spring semesters only.
Withdrawals
If a student withdraws from your class, that space becomes immediately available to another student (if the date is within the class-add guidelines and if the enrollment cap on the class has not been reached).
Students may drop a class any time during the first ten weeks. Withdrawals after that time require scholastic committee permission via petition.
Here is the Drop/Add Calendar.
Petitions for Drop/Add
Students must get late drop/add approval via the University’s online petition system. The petition will be automatically routed to the instructor for approval. Here is the petition form.
