Appointments

uAPS negotiates appointments with qualified individuals for class instruction and as-needed course development. Hiring is overseen by the discipline faculty director and the Undergraduate Programs associate dean.  Anyone interested in teaching with uAPS should contact one of these individuals.  All appointments must go through the University of Minnesota HR system.

Instruction:
All uAPS instructors are part-time practitioner faculty. uAPS instructors are appointed on a semester basis. Instruction may be classroom-based, online, or blended classroom and online via the University's Canvas, a web-based learning system. Occasionally a class may be offered synchronously but virtually via Zoom. Faculty are compensated for teaching services: preparation for and teaching of classes, office hours, and working individually with students. Compensation does not extend to performance of other academic tasks such as committee work, attendance at staff meetings, administrative tasks, research, or publication. Faculty are not compensated for cancelled semester classes, whether the decision to cancel is made by CCAPS or the instructor. Letters of appointment for cancelled classes are void.

Course Development / Redesign:
A course development appointment may be offered to create or revise a classroom or online course, with the length of the agreement typically three to six months. Each uAPS course is designed by a team consisting of content and design experts--the faculty member, the uAPS major faculty director, an Academic Technology & Design (ATD) instructional designer, and the uAPS associate dean. The course content created becomes the shared property of the individual faculty member and the University of Minnesota. Each course is designed to encompass multiple perspectives and provide for delivery by any appropriately qualified instructor. The course development process also offers professional development as part of the instructional design. In addition, professional associations will consider this work for awarding CEUs toward professional certification requirements. Partial course redesigns may take considerably less time and receive correspondingly smaller compensation.

Payroll

uAPS faculty are appointed as employees of the University of Minnesota for the duration of the appointment. Payroll is handled by the CCAPS Payroll office in cooperation with the uAPS office and Central Payroll. All applicable deductions are entered.

In order to be placed on the University of Minnesota payroll, all new employees must complete the online I-9 documentation process and upload the specified Identification documents (i.e., Social Security card plus driver's license or valid passport).

Payment Schedule
uAPS instructors are paid the contracted total in 10 installments across the semester in which they teach, except for summer, which has only 5 installments. Payments are released bi-weekly on Wednesdays.  You will receive your payment via U.S. mail unless you elect Direct Deposit (see below).
